Highlights of the 5th Grade Curriclum:
Language Arts
Students will develop an understanding of a variety of text and other media in order to become independent readers and writers who show evidence of learning.
The students will:
• Understand and acquire new vocabulary and content specific vocabulary to use correctly in reading and writing.
• Identify basic facts, main ideas, analyze and apply knowledge of reading for interpretation.
• Identify and analyze literary elements of setting, characters, conflict, structure, theme, plot in order to develop comprehension.
• Identify, compare, contrast and analyze a variety of literature, fiction and nonfiction, drama, mystery, myths, legends, adventure, historical writings, contemporary novels, short stories, poetry and other genre to develop understanding and high level thinking
• Use active reading strategies such as previewing, questioning, visualizing, predicting, and rereading within a balanced literacy instructional approach in order to achieve independent comprehension.
• Identify, analyze and research nonfiction or information materials in order to provide evidence of learning
Writing
• Identify basic parts of speech, noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, adjective, conjunction and preposition, use correct spelling and writing mechanics
• Write across the curriculum in narrative, expository, persuasive and other formats for a variety of audiences utilizing the John Collins writing method
• Write with attention to main idea, supporting details, paragraphs, figurative language and structure
• Apply knowledge within all areas of language arts to provide evidence of learning
Handwriting
• Use a combination of typing, print and cursive writing to produce legible writing
Spelling
• Apply spelling rules, patterns and high frequency words in order to produce correct spelling
Mathematics
Students engage in problem solving, communicating, reasoning with proof and connecting within the mathematic strands of Number Sense and Operations, Patterns, Relations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Data Analysis in order to prove evidence of reasoning within number systems.
The students will:
• Read, write, order and compare numbers up to 1,000,000,000 in order to demonstrate understanding of numeracy
• Use expanded notation to represent whole numbers to 10,000
• Demonstrate understanding of fractions to ratio of whole numbers
• Identify and use equivalent fractions
• Identify prime and composite numbers
• Add and subtract whole numbers to hundred thousands with mastery
• Master times tables through 12
• Multiply 4 digits by 3 digits
• Compute long division by 2 digit divisor with remainders
•• Use mathematical symbols and terminology appropriately
• Use mathematical application within number sense to demonstrate reasoning
