Highlights of the 2nd Grade Curriculum
Religion – Each child is developing a relationship with God so he or she will be guided to learn to praise and experience God through prayer. This is the beginning of a lifelong experience with God. They will appreciate and cultivate the sense of wonder that is integral to children. They are developing a lifelong attitude of awe before the wonderful mystery of God. The weekly Gospel readings are studied and discussed. Weekly prayer services are held. The highlight of the 2nd grade is the preparation and reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist.
Language Arts
Speaking and Listening Skills
Reading Skills - The language arts program focuses on engaging the students while reading fiction, non-fiction and poetry selections. They will particpate in discussion and writing about what they have read in independent and group learnaing opportunities that promote skill development in:
Decoding and word attack skills
Sight and special words
Word function
Vocabulary development
Story and poetry elements
Grammar and Writing Skills
Students will study different areas of grammar and gain a greater vocabulary with which to talk boutt in their reding and writing. They will develop their writing skill into a variety of purposes - narratives, descriptive, letters, book reports, etc.
Phonics
They will develop fluency and more advanced phonics and word study skills, including vowel digraphs and diphthongs, inflectional endings, prefixes and suffices. Reliable decoding rules and explicit word strategies aid in automatic word recognition, enable children to read for meaning
Other highlights . . .
Math – Second graders concentrate on addition and subtraction through 20, money, telling time, measurement and word problems. The year culminates with multiplication and division readiness, place value and addition and subtraction of 3 digit numbers.
Social Studies – Map skills, people who make history, citizenship and Neighbors Near and Far are some of the themes covered in 2nd grade.
Japanese - Basic Japanese greetings, songs, and culture
Art – Self portraits, making paper, cave dwewlling animals, clay and many other fun projects
PE – Listening games, stretches, warm ups, tag, bean bag play, hula hoop, and parachute play are highlights of the PE program
Computer – The students explore the alphabet, sight words, and math games while learning basic computer literacy and skills. Familiarity with the keyboard and the development of desktop publishing skills will also be taught
