Highlights of the core curriculum:
Mathematics
A continued effort to enforce arithmetic skills as key concepts of algebra and geometry are introduced. The idea of positive and negative numbers is explored. Place value and number sense concepts are enhanced. Manipulatives are used to model new mathematics concepts while repetition and practice are used to ensure proficiency in topics such as operations on whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
Literature & Vocabulary
This course provides (1) an introduction to reading and writing by using grammar as a base, and (2) an introduction to literature which includes fiction, non-fiction, short stories, poetry, and novels. Students will complete Sadlier-Oxford vocabulary workshop.Writing styles will be developed with appropriate projects and assignments.
Social Studies
World History: Mesopotamia, Sumer, Egypt, Ancient China, India, Ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire. Multicultural understanding and issues of peace and justice are also stressed through-out the curriculum.
Science
The focus of 6th grade is physical science, Chemistry, Biology, Cell theory, the Human Body, genetics, and human reproduction. Teachers incorporate the scientific method with hands on activities including laboratory experiments.
